I had an open 273 12 bolt rear from a 1972 El Camino so I used that for the core to rebuild for this chassis. Built October 1, 1971 (KDC 293 1), Buffalo NY, 273 gears.
I wire brushed, it with carb cleaner and disassembled it. Pulled out the single track carrier and axles.
I turned the axle hub outer diameters to 5.80” to clear the 2002 Camaro front rotor’s inner recess. I added long wheel studs 7/16-20x2.875”L with .47” knurls. These factory axles should be fine, I am not sure the added expense of new Moser Axles is needed in this build. I don’t think I will ever hook up the power from the turbo LSX on street tires.
Bought a brand new Eaton posi unit for $450 and a set of used 308 used gears for $125. I paid a local transmission shop that was very familiar with old school chevy rear rebuilds from Sigmon's Garage at a cost of $250, with me supplying all the bearings and seals.
Granite Falls, NC
I added SAE80/90wt gear lube with GM posi rear lube additive.
